for adoption. amy robach is here with that. >> reporter: george, good morning to you. it is an incredibly difficult and emotional custody case. a battle between a biological father who never knew what happened to his child. and the family who desperately wants to continue raising the little girl they love and legally adopted. this little girl is at the center of a fierce fight between a biological father and her adoptive parents. and this morning, both sides are digging in to keep a child they say is theirs. the girl's biological father, a staff sergeant in the army, says he never even knew he had a daughter. nearly two years ago, while he was stationed in south carolina, he says his now-ex-wife gave birth in utah and gave up the child for adoption without his knowledge or permission. >> she has a right to be able to be with her father. and that was taken away. >> reporter: achane's attorney says the birth mother gave the wrong address to reach him, preventing him from asserting his parental rights. experts say utah's adoption laws are less strict than other states. >> for whatever reason

. abc's amy robach has more on those victims. good morning, amy. >> george, it's impossible to imagine the horrific reality that so many families are waking up to this morning. that what happened here less than 24 hours ago, actually happened. and this morning, we are learning more about the teachers and the children inside that school who lost their lives. distraught family and friends came together to mourn, to cry and to remember the 27 lives lost here in newtown, connecticut. >> i'm so sorry. >> reporter: overnight, we learned the names of those we lost, among them, 47-year-old dawn hochsprung. an award-winning principal. and 27-year-old vicki soto, a first grade teacher, whose first instinct was to protect her students, throwing herself in the line of fire. 20 of 27 victims were students at sandy hook elementary. 20 children. and now, 20 families mourn precious lives lost too soon. >> this scaring event, will be with us and them for years and years to come. >> reporter: and across the country, america mourns. as parents try to explain how a nightmare became a reality. almost impos

is tracking it this morning, beginning with sam. good morning, sam. >> good morning, george. as the storm that terrorized the country, now that it's moved in the northeast, it is a big heavy rain situation with wind. we've had an inch of rain so far in the new york city area. another half-inch of rain coming. 45-mile-per-hour, 50-mile-per-hour winds. take a look at the damage that came in with the winds. four stories' worth of scaffolding collapsing. just one of the scaffolding collapses that we have seen in new york. "gma" storm site radar will show you there's plenty left in this storm, still plenty of rain from washington, d.c. to boston today. and plenty of snow in the back end behind it. we use this model to show us where the worst winds will be. what you need to look at is the red arrows. and those red arrows go from the boston area, north into maine, all the way to atlanta. this storm has big snowfall totals, big-time. 20 inches of snow coming down in some locations. and one of those places, williamsburg, iowa, picked up a good, heavy snowstorm and a blizzard. our ginger zee is rig
